Don’t Play With Fire

As we tinker away in our garages, basements, and other poorly-ventilated hideaways, it’s critical to consider the potential fire risks lurking in our environment.  I like to think we all know the basics (wear goggles, unplug your soldering iron when you leave the room),  but doing the research for this article had me giving several of my own practices the side eye. I also realized that buying a $12 fire blanket off Amazon might just be the best purchase I could make for my shop. If you don’t have one (or a few!) I highly recommend the investment.

In this article, we cover the 4 “R”s of our own fire safety code:

  • Resistance
  • Refraction
  • Reaction
  • FRiction

Yes, I know “fRiction” is a bit of a stretch, but hey, there are only so many ways to describe the cause of a smoldering metal shard that leaps from your drill press.  Whether your creative adventures revolve around paint and foam or wires and solder, it’s always a good idea to carefully evaluate your workspace to keep something really dumb from happening in your smart space.
